If you want, you can try it. Install a lightbox plugin and change my php code.

For example this could be a Memory Limit Problem: http://www.visser.com.au/blog/thumbnail-generation-php-memory-limit-nextgen-gallery/
But I think the guys from the nextgen gallery forum can help you.

your problem sounds like a javascript problem. You can deactivate your other plugins and check it. If the problem disappears, a other not well programmed plugin is the reason.
Use step by step reactivation of plugins to detect the evil.
