In reply to: Fatal PHP error, WordPress 5.6.16Yes, thank you, you’re absolutely right! Fortunately it was a trivial hack to fix, there was just one ‘include’ that included the rogue file and when that was removed (the include that is) everything came back to life and seems to work correctly.
I’ll have to get the owner of the site to change passwords.

In reply to: Problem upgrading from old version, can't login as adminOK, my last idea seems to have actually worked! 🙂
I moved the old installation off the directory where it was installed and installed WordPress 3.3.1 there instead. I then edited the new installation’s wp-config.php file so that it uses the database from the old site. It didn’t all work immediately but the admin pages were OK, when I then went to view the site WordPress offered to update the database so I let it do that – and it all works now!
I’m impressed that it turned out to be so painless.
Thank you! I just couldn’t see where to get it from. All working now.

In reply to: How to update a rather poorly WordPress 2.5 site?Brilliant thank you. That looks like a pretty complete description of what I need to do.
I just discovered that the database is still on an old hosting service that I stopped using over a year ago! I think a quick backup is called for! 🙂
