Thank you for your reply. Yes your summation of my problem is correct.

I have assumed that the customer screen is part of woocommerce as the setting is reached through menu options:-

woocommerce/settings/accounts & privacy

then on this page

Personal data retention (section)

and then

Retain inactive accounts set to 1 week.

I have assumed that some item of information must be present for the inactive customer account to be deleted so deletion requests are ignored?

Hi, Thank you for looking at my problem. Since raising the issue, I have found the site log file reporting that the database is full so I used Litespeed Cache to ease this situation and the problem is resolved!
It would appear that the storefront is receiving an error which is reported as a stock error rather than a software issue.
So I will now close the report as resolved.
