when i upgraded to v3.0 I also added in the anti-captcha plugin.
wordpress sets the correct cookie path (in my case this is /blog/ ) the plugin sets the cookie path as root and therefore interferes with other subdirectories

I’d searched but had not found the link
I tried it on a copy of of the original wp2.0.4 + copy database and it worked a treat….
I’ll copy back into production and keep updated in future
