In reply to: .htaccessResolved this with trial and error. In wp-downloadmanager I needed to set the download option “download method” to “Redirect to file” instead of “Output to file” .
This the allowed the .htaccess file to work andf rthus ask for passwords.

In reply to: .htaccessOk, I have a download directory within wordpress that has customer user manuals for the products we sell.
If we type the full url to the manuals we get the password box. However if we use WordPress and click on our downloads page we can access all of the files. I should say we are using wp-download manager plugin to control the downloads.
I could have possible set up a user within wp-download manager of “customer” but when they log in it takes them straight to a profile page so they could alter the password etc.
Very frustrating, even our hosting company is baffled as to why wordpress is overruling .htaccess security.
