I didn’t think of using the pre command with text already preformatted with a border and background color.

Thanks for the idea, and the link to a CSS plugin. I will see if I can make this work. The problem I still see is that IF the preformatted poem runs to more than one page (the commentary would be entered as standard unbordered text), I would still have an awkward pagination problem. I am presuming that a long blog text entered in visual or text mode would be scrollable and not have to be broken into separate pages, but I am not really sure about this.

    Hello Esmi,

Thank you for your quick response to my desperation query.

I am publishing many poems as posts. I am not copying Word documents directly into WordPress, but only after first converting them to PDF format, with borders, and treating them as images in WordPress (which seems to work OK, but I am stuck with the need to awkwardly go from page to page in long poems plus commentary). I have thought of making internal styling commands, but think I’d prefer to use external style sheets.
In any case I do use line break commands (<br />) in the poem text itself. I didn’t think of using the

command with text already preformatted with a border and background color.

Thank you very much for your suggestions, kmessinger. I have found the solution to my problem–it was just a stupid operator error that I’m too embarrassed about even to confess. But at least it has added to my knowledge of dealing with WordPress, though I’m afraid I’ve wasted your time and intellectual energy. But thank you.

    The ticket is now resolved.

Sure enough, acivating the Twenty Seventeen theme made no difference.

But I noticed another anomaly. With the twenty Seventeen theme, and also with the Twenty Twelve theme which I reactivated, in the text entry box immediately below “Add Post” there is no selection between Visual mode and Text mode. What to make of this? Is WordPress not installed properly?

Deactivating all plug-ins did not remove the problem. The default theme for last year was Twenty Sixteen, although I had earlier changed it to Experon and then, sometime in January of this year I switched over to Twenty Twelve with the full-screen, (no sidebar) option, but I believe everything was working OK with this older theme. The current default option would presumably be Twenty Seventeen, which also allows a full-screen option (which I want). I will try using Twenty Seventeen with no customized options, but without much hope that I will get better results. If lots of other people aren’t having the same problem as I have, then I’m just doing something wrong.

    Dear bdbrown,

Thank for your reply. I believe it tells me all I needed to know. Your patience with a newbie is also appreciated. I don’t find any “Unsubscribe” at the top of the link you gave me, but probably putting a checkmark on “Mark this topic as resolved” will stop any further emailing.

I think I must have tried http://localhost:8888/wp-local before. Anyway, that doesn’t work, either. I keep going to a list of documents and tutorials that I could open, but not to a WordPress installation screen. Thanks, SniffleValve, for the suggestion anyway. And thanks to everyone for their suggestions, but I’m still totally balked.

I will try http://localhost:8888/wp-local. If it works, I’ll tell you.

I did have Apache and My SQL running in MAMP. I have tried every combination I could think of. Nothing gets me where i want to go! I wsh someone could take over my computer and see if they get the same result I do.

I should have said, I’ve tried every combination with http://localhost:8888/ that I can think of.

Same thing happens. I have tried every combination with http://localhost/ that I can think of.

Thank you, sterndata. I think you’ve solved a problem that had everybody else flummoxed–it certainly had me flummoxed.

I would post a link to my site, but I don’t know how. I said I’m a newbie.

I’m trying to upload poems and commentary from my iMac(nalready typed in Microsoft Word, and convertible by OSX 10.10.5 to .htm format) to to be published as a WordPress post. Nothing more than that.

Thanks for your reply. Using “Add media” was part of my workaround. I was finally able to get files into “draft” form, but still can’t get them into useable form at “Add Post.”
