I suppose so, but I have several other sites at my hosting service. Just easier to continue on here, at least I think so. I did resolve the issue to my partial satisfaction with a suggested workaround.

nothing seems to work. According to the hosting service, a mod_rewrite application is installed. I have tried various versions of the .htaccess file shown here and get the same error.
