No, if I remove the widget from the recent post-thumbnail it looks blank but if I place the widget its background changes to blue.
Yes, the default theme is available but it lacks some customization options. Like header-foorter customization specific colour changing options and more. Please refer to generate press premium theme for more options. I hope that WordPress can provide more than that if they look into that.
