a not successful search is not a 404 error.
A 404 error occurs when a specific file is not fond. In case of a search the search page is displayed. If you do a search and the searched term can not be found a message is shown. But it is still the search page that is displayed. This page is found, so no error occurs.
That’s why this can not be handled by the 404page plugin.
The search page is part of the Theme you are using. The message that is shown when nothing is found is coded in a template file. To change it you would have to change your theme. This requires coding. The file that handles the search normally is named search.php.
Never change the original Theme but create a Child Theme! See https://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Child_Themes.
Hope this clarifies the situation.

this is a known issue. 404page does not work with WPML.
I subscribed to the WPML developer program to not have to buy a license. My request stared in June(!). Current state is that 404page was tested by the WPML team and they confirmed my problem definition. They promised me free access for testing. I’m awaiting the credentials since two weeks.
Due to the response time of the WPML team and the fact I’m not familiar with WPML unfortunately I’m not able to set a timeframe.
I’ll keep you informed.

If you are not using WPML please try to deactivate all other plugins. If it then works please reactivate plugins one by one and test after each step. Let me know with which plugin causes 404page to break and I’ll try to fix it.

Maybe that’s coded in the Child Theme to always show the sidebar for this category?
Could you temporary switch to the original Theme and check it?

What should “Author does not answer support requests” mean?
Even from big companies you often don’t get response within a few hours. And this is FREE.
If you want to have support within minutes you’d have to pay a lot!
Your support request is ONE DAY old! Not THTEE MONTHS!
You cant’ await support withins minutes for a free product!
