In reply to: [Hueman] Changing colors of mobile menu? How?Thanks @dacki,
but that didn’t do it either… πForum: Plugins
In reply to: [Tiled Galleries Carousel Without Jetpack] Doesn’t work full width ?@antonyjosephsmith Thank you very much, this was exactly what I was looking for!
Now I only need to adjust the margin-bottom (easy). πForum: Plugins
In reply to: [Tiled Galleries Carousel Without Jetpack] Outdated phpI have it running under PHP7 on my site – and haven’t seen any issues.
Though I didn’t check it with a php7-compatibility checking tool (do I really want to find bad surprises?).I had posted about this earlier, but couldn’t understand/follow the instructions in the support reply:
https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/topic/how-to-set-no-image-compression-for-photon-images/#post-9341074So now I installed https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/tiled-gallery-carousel-without-jetpack/ and the issue (and bloat on my server) is gone!
…and I thought WordPress was meant for laymen. These instructions aren’t something what I can understand and follow – so I gave up!
But I didn’t give up completely: I uninstalled JetPack today – and replaced almost all the functions I was using with individual plugins!
PingDom speed check with Jetpack (taken this morning):
Page Size 1.8MB, loading time 1.92 seconds, requests 102
After I removed JetPack and installed replacement plugings:
Page Size 1.2MB, loading time 1.37 seconds, requests 67 (I will work on that).I should have done this much earlier… Bye-bye!
ps: I just found this (older) article, but I confess I don’t understand it: https://developer.wordpress.com/2015/02/04/lossy-image-compression-with-photon/
It says “You can drop a snippet like this in a plugin to set the quality and strip parameters for every image on the site.” Ahem?
Where do I drop this snippet into?
What plugin are you talking about?
Would this go into my function.php? Please explain!

In reply to: Automatically created image thumbnails – how to reduce the number!I only know, in respect to the theme I’m using, the free version of HUEMAN, that there are 4 image sizes generated only for ‘featured image’ display = frontpage use!
Most images I upload are 1024x768px (or less tall, eg. 1024x640px)
The pixel sizes for ‘featured’, as set by HUEMAN, are 1320×500, 720×340, 520×245, 980x450px – all less high than the original full-size featured image – that’s why I actually crop these ‘by hand’ and upload via FTP. This seems to be the only way I can control crop section and also compression level (WordPress does a shit job when it comes to compressing images, either pixelated or way too big a file size).
All these 4 sizes are not called for anywhere else, only as ‘featured image’ on various sections of the frontpage – yet they are created of each and every photo I upload!
Reread the last paragraph I wrote in my previous post: If WordPress canβt distinguish between image sizes, which a theme requires for the frontpage (featured images), and image sizes it requires for display within a post or page (the ones you’re talking about in our reply) β then I guess itβs time to review the naming options. Give one name to the featured image sizes (not automatically created upon media upload), another name for post related image sizes (automatically created when files are uploaded).
————————————
BTW: you should really strip camera EXIF information off your images before you upload them, as it saves some Kb in file size (and helps with site speed). I save all mine for web (Photoshop or Irfanview function).
I’m not a dumb-ass amateur, I create websites since 1997, and I also know my image compression.

In reply to: Automatically created image thumbnails – how to reduce the number! You miss-understand the whole point of my issue.
Yes, I understand that several sizes are required by the theme – but ONLY for the ‘featured image’ – NOT FOR EACH AND EVERY IMAGE! <<< that’s the whole point!
So why create all these (possibly theme required) sizes of each and every image if they are never used? The theme only uses these particular sizes of the single ‘featured image’ it displays on the frontpage.
My point:
+ create these (theme required) sizes when the ‘featured image’ is chosen!
– don’t create these sizes when images are uploaded to the media library! They are dead ballast because nobody needs them!
In my case, with image heavy blog posts, they are dead files (I never use or need) in the count of thousands…and gigabytes of storage. If WordPress can’t distinguish between image sizes, which a theme requires for the frontpage (featured images), and image sizes it requires for display within a post or page – then I guess it’s time to review the naming options. Give one name to the featured image sizes (not automatically created upon media upload), another name for post related image sizes (automatically created when files are uploaded).
But please get rid of this stupid bloat.—————————-
BTW: I am sure I posted this under https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/forum/requests-and-feedback/ – the most appropriate forum I could think of (my browser history confirms this). So why was the post moved?

In reply to: [Hueman] My menu isn’t working on mobile + H header format@jspill – clearing the cache (or the latest update to 3.3.14 – not sure which one, as I hadn’t checked after updating) did the following:
1. the menu hamburger on top is now completely gone;
2. the hamburger menu button at the bottom of the page works as it should.= still not okay!
Forum: Themes and Templates
In reply to: [Hueman] My menu isn’t working on mobile + H header formatThanks to the recent update 3.3.14 the H header font sizes are not overwritten anymore!
But the MOBILE MENU issue remains! (see above)

In reply to: [Hueman] My menu isn’t working on mobile + H header formatMy wife informed me, that the menu issue happened to her over a week ago – so it’s NOT the latest update which caused this…
Travelling full time (with only mobile data!) I don’t have the time to check such things on a regular basis – I simply expect such core functions to work.
So what can be done about this?
To clarify my settings in “WP Customiser” for the mobile menu:
Select the menu(s) to use for mobile devices: Topbar Menu
Mobile devices : top menu visibility on scroll: Always visible
Style of the mobile menu button: SimpleYet, when one clicks the ‘Hamburger’ button no menu expands – NADA!
—————————-
Yes, the changes to the H headers was mentioned in the change log.
But that doesn’t explain why they were done in a way that they overwrite my chosen styles, saved in a child theme.I want to get MY styles back. But how?

It’s unfortunate, but here on WP support the shortest (and dumbest) questions seem to get resolved more quickly.
If you click my name you can get my profile; I guess over 70% of all my support questions were never even replied to (not a single answer) because I had asked more complex questions.
ps: I closed the other ticket and added a link to here for final solution (might as well help others).
^^ see last post above for solution
Resolved in my other thread!
Link https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/topic/still-the-same-issue-with-menu-color-since-3-3-8-no-fix/ for people who face similar issue.Thank you @bdbrown
That did it! I seem to have been on the right track then, but somehow it didn’t work to add that code to the lines Nikolas gave me earlier. π

Re. my reply to the moderator: it really pisses me off if people make half-assed comments to something they obviously haven’t read in full.
It’s a new trend which you can see everywhere!Write an email to support of your bank, host, insurance – you name it… I now have started to NUMBER my questions in the hope that people read more than just the first line(s) and give incomplete replies. It doesn’t help much either.
I always believe it should be easier to deal with a number of points from one client at one time, instead of receiving 4 messages with 4 separate questions – one after the other. Often things can be related too, so a longer inquiry might show connections more clearly… But of course staff is now rated by number of tickets they can deal with in a day – so that also discourages long inquiries. Stupid world we live in!
