I think it could be possible with css if you work with a fix height but I’m sorry, I have no time to figure out how you exactly could do this at the moment.
you can sort your images with nextGen
or you can set the start image with the “start” field in the admin-interface.Forum: Plugins

If I click on that link: Gallery preview there are no thumbs, but images are clickable. Looks good.
normally thumbs are scrolling, like on http://software.bmo-design.de/scrollgallery/wordpress-plugin-nextgen-scroll-gallery.html
Prev/next Buttons are a pro feature. Or you code it by your self
