I have now renamed the folder of the wp-ticker plugin ‘wp-ticker-disabled’ – and the site is back online!
Any advice on what was wrong, how to fix this permanently (and on the backup questions) is still highly appreciated!

I’ve now switched to “useful banner manger”, even though it doesn’t feature auto-rotation.
