Thanks for the feedback. It appears that on this occasion an earlier attempt to update the version of WordPress had left the files in a bit of a mess.
By copying over a cleaned up version the site is now working again.
The server error is a HTTP 500 error. The error message itself is:
The website encountered an error while retrieving http://www.kamac.co.uk/sjic/wp-admin/. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.
I am using WordPress 3.1.1. I’d rather not upgrade WordPress at this point in time.
Is there no one out there who has come across this problem before?
I’m fairly sure it must be something to do with the way the blog encodes the characters – presumably there must be a setting in a config file to put ths right?
