I am sorry about your experience, but I must also clarify that the claim is not like so.
Since this is related to the PRO version of the plugin, you must activate the PRO license in other to be able to update within your WordPress dashboard, it is simple and straightforward, as documented here:

The only reason why you might not be able to update in your dashboard is if you did not register the license or you did not properly move the license from one site to another or there is another unknown glitch on your website, and in any of these cases, we expect you to reach out to our team to check for you asap and clarify or fix the issue if need be.
