In reply to: [UpdraftPlus: WP Backup & Migration Plugin] Yet another FTP issueHi,
Thanks for your message. This can happen because UpdraftPlus connects through your web server’s PHP FTP functions, which may not resolve hostnames the same way as FTP apps like FileZilla.
If the connection works using the IP but fails using the hostname, please continue using the IP address instead – this is the recommended solution. Some hosts restrict PHP’s DNS lookups, which causes this issue.
If your IP changes frequently, you can contact your hosting provider and ask them to ensure that PHP can resolve your dynamic hostname correctly.
Best,
BryleHi,
It appears to be a file permission/ownership issue, meaning UpdraftPlus or WordPress does not have the correct read or write permission to a certain folder or file.
The following article on Smashing Magazine is a good guide as to the file permissions/ownerships that are required for WordPress: https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2014/05/proper-wordpress-filesystem-permissions-ownerships/#file-and-folder-ownership-for-wordpress
Let us know if above article helps to fix the issue?
It could also mean that you don’t have enough disk space available. Please check on that as well.
Thanks,
BryleHi,
If the mu-plugins folder isn’t present in your site’s wp-content directory, the option to include it won’t appear.
Please also check in the “Settings” tab > Include in files backup: if the “Must-use plugins” option is ticked.Best,
BryleHi,
Thanks for your question!
This usually happens because downloading large backup files directly from your WordPress dashboard can use too much server memory or timeout the connection.
To avoid crashes, it’s best to download the files via FTP or your hosting File Manager instead — you’ll find them in the wp-content/updraft folder.
Alternatively, connecting remote storage (like Google Drive or Dropbox) helps you safely access backups without overloading your server.
Best regards,
BryleHi,
Thanks for the update!
If no remote storage is set, backups are only stored locally under wp-content/updraft.
If they disappear soon after creation, it’s likely your hosting setup (e.g. staging site cleanup or limited disk quota) is automatically removing temporary files.Could you please check with your host if old or large files in wp-content/updraft are being auto-deleted? You can also connect a remote storage option (like Google Drive or Dropbox) to make sure your backups stay safe long-term.

BryleHi,
Thanks for sending the log! I see that the schedule is setup properly.
To check why backups run every 2 hours, please share a screenshot of your UpdraftPlus > Settings page (showing both Files and Database schedules).
Check if “Back up before updating” is enabled as that can also trigger extra backups.
You can also use the WP Crontrol plugin to see if there are duplicate updraft_backup cron events.
Thanks,
BryleHi Hiacynta,
Thanks for the report!
Could you please send us a copy of your latest backup log and a screenshot of your current UpdraftPlus schedule settings? Since file uploads aren’t allowed here, please upload them to an online service like Pastebin, Dropbox, or Google Drive, then share the link here.
Once we review those, we’ll help identify why it’s backing up every two hours instead of weekly.

In reply to: [UpdraftPlus: WP Backup & Migration Plugin] Backup not finishedHi,
Thanks for reaching out!
That error indicates the connection to Dropbox was interrupted during upload — this often happens on local environments like MAMP, which don’t have a stable public connection. Dropbox requires a live, web-accessible server to complete uploads, so local setups usually can’t maintain the handshake.
Could you please send us a screenshot of your Dropbox settings from the UpdraftPlus dashboard? It would also help to re-authenticate your Dropbox connection to ensure it’s properly linked. You can follow this step-by-step guide here: How to Connect UpdraftPlus to Dropbox
Best,
BryleHi,
Can you please try to download the backup files from the remote storage manually then upload it to wp-content/updraft folder and try to click “Rescan local folder for backups”, This will shows the backups in the list and then you can try to click restore button.
Regards,
BryleHi Hiacynta,
To help us work out the cause of your problem, can you please send us a copy of the full backup log?
This can be found in the UpdraftPlus Existing Backups tab. The contents will be too long to post here directly, but you can use an online service such as Dropbox or Pastebin, and post the link here.
Kind Regards,
BryleHi,
Apologies for the delay.
Thanks for the update. I’ve just checked the clone link you shared, and it appears to be working fine now. It would sometimes take a while for the site to propagate.
If you’ve purchased clone tokens, please reach out to us directly through our premium support form here: https://teamupdraft.com/support/premium-support-form/

BryleHi,
UpdraftPlus uses .gz format by default for database backups, it’s simply a compressed SQL file and completely normal. Some hosts like IONOS occasionally flag these files incorrectly because of their automated scanners.
You can confirm the file is safe by downloading it and opening it with any decompression tool (like 7-Zip or WinRAR). You’ll see it contains a plain .sql file inside. If you’ve already scanned it and it came back clean, then this is just a false positive from your host’s malware scanner.

In reply to: [UpdraftPlus: WP Backup & Migration Plugin] Failed restore with updraftplusHi,
That message means another backup or restore process is already running — or a previous one didn’t close properly, leaving a “lock” in place.
Here’s what you can do:
1. Wait at least 3–5 minutes, then try the restore again.
2. You can also check your server for any stalled PHP processes and end them from your hosting control panel. If the issue persists, please check your PHP error log for any related errors and send us a copy of the full restoration log (found in /wp-content/updraft/) so we can review it further.
Best regards,
Bryle
